That is entirely possible.  I often run through scales, arpeggios, etc., on
the guitar while watching the news and waiting for the weather report (the
only part of the program I'm really interested in, since it's usually the
only part that is half-way related to reality).  I find that I can also run
through pieces that I already know pretty well, just to get them under my
fingers more securely.  The only problem is that I can't play while music
is coming from the box, so I have to stop during commercials.

But for serious practice, of course, I have to turn off the tube and get
down to business.
