I've always thought that Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra (which received an
outstanding performance a couple of weeks ago in Dallas) was nocturnal for
its first four movements, lit variously by moonlight, starlight, lanterns,
and street lamps. The sun finally comes out in the fifth movement.
