Although Berlioz was a confirmed agnostic he turned twice (at least) to
Catholic liturgy to explore spacial music with the audience ideally in the
middle. His Requiem and Te Deum both explore this possibility. Havergal
Brian's "Gothic" symphony also features an exploration in this area.
