Almost a madeleine!  I remember when, 50 years ago, the music library of
the NYPL system was on West 53 Street, right across the street from MOMA.
I don't know about the accessiblity of its sheet music as I wouldn't have
been able to read it, but I did listen to their records, all of them 78's
at the time.  You had to make an appointment one or two weeks in advance,
I think, for an hour of listening.  They would bring you the album(s) you
selected and you would listen to the records over ear phones.  So far as
I recall, only one phonograph was available.  Naturally, the recordings
didn't circulate.
