I don't remember what came out of this thread, but some composers *did*
dabble with authentic chinese tunes.  On example is Hindemith, who in
"Variations ueber Themes von Carl Maria von Weber" develops a chinese
theme in the third movement "Turandot".  The chinese melody he got from -
of course - von Weber, who in his turn got it from Lully...but after all,
it is an authentic chinese melody.
