For many years the generally recommended alternative to the composer's
own versions was the Van Beinum with the Concertgebouw (now out of print).
High on most recent recommended lists have been the Boulez (with the
Cleveland), Michael Tilson Thomas (with the Boston) and Colin Davis (with
the Concertgebouw). Choosing a version of the Sacre that suits one's
orgiastic needs is a matter of finding the right power and tension in the
music not to mention orchestral sound. (For artistic reasons, I would not
recommend the Bernstein or Solti versions, but these are always subjective
matters.)
