Review in Audio Magazine, 3/99- Musician Igor Kipness has written a
lauditory review of this new 12-CD set released under NYP 9801-9812.
He suggests that the set be nominated as album of the year. The first
followup from the limited edition "The Historic Broadcasts, 1923-1987" the
new all Mahler set contins performances by some of the most distinguished
players of the last half century, a vertitable cornocopia of musical
treasures, according to Kipness. That two important Mahler conductors
are missiing can be ascribed to Mahler himself predating live music
broadcasting in New York and Bernsteins performances available from other
sources. The names included will spark recognition amongst even non-Mahler
fans. Performances by Barbirolli, Steinberg, Walter, Boulex, Tennstedt,
Kubelick, Solti, Mitropoulas, Stokowsky and Mehta are suplemented by an
interview with Mahler's daughter Anna who knew many of the star-studded
personalities featured in the set. A generous number of Mahler's 1905
piano roll performances are also included. Kipnis also praises the
technical work leading to this release including generous background
material included in the text. More information about the set is available
from the web site 'www.newyorkphilharmoni.org' (I submit this item in the
interest of friends who are Mahler fans as I am not an agent nor have any
financial interest in this venture.)
