How about Kalevi Aho's Symphony No 9 for Trombone and Orchestra
(composed 1993-1994)? This is available on BIS CD-706 with the already
noted Christian Lindberg as soloist (and Osmo Vanska conducting the Lahti
Symphony Orchestra). This isn't my usual musical stomping grounds, but Aho
was recommended to me by a fellow list member and I saw this in the cutout
bins. The piece mixes old and new styles with often brilliant scoring
(including a harpsichord).

One of my favorite moments is the cadenza in the third and final movement.
It includes what the notes describe as multiphonic trombone-playing
techniques (and which sounds to me like Jimi Hendrix-like electric guitar
feedback) along with a quote from Mahler's 3rd. Irresistable!

This is a very interesting piece, one that I look forward to returning
to.
