In my Eulenburg pocket score of the 5th, there is a note on the movement
timings in a rehearsal Mahler conducted in 1905: Mvt. 1, 12 min; 2 minute
pause; Mvt. 2, 15 min; 3 minute pause; Mvt. 3, 17 min; 3 minute pause; Mvt.
4, 9 min; Mvt. 5, 15 min. So 9 minutes for the fourth movement seems rather
authoritative. I too think that it is often played much too slowly and
treacly. Rather than a song of love, this makes it sound more like rolling
over and going to sleep afterward.
