I just heard on the radio that he died earlier today, aged 82. I recall
his visits for two successive years to our university under our concert
subscription series, when he performed Bach's *Magnificat* and Mozart's
*Requiem*, both first hearings for me of works that I shall always cherish.
I remember his final encore, when he brought down all the male voices, whom
he joined in a lusty rendition of Rogers' "There is Nothing Like a Dame"
after which he announced that, after we had heard him sing, there was no
point to further encores. I shall miss him and I'm sad.
