I missed the start of this, but has anyone mentioned the Fuga Giocosa by
John Knowles Paine.  The fugue uses an American tune "Over the Fence is
Out Boys" as its subject line.  It can be foound on a disc called Edward
MacDowell & Company with Malcom Frager on piano (New World Records 80206).
Unfortunately the disc has more of the "friends" than of MacDowell, with
the Paine piece being the best of the bunch in my opinion.
