Amongst contemporary popular composers, McCartney, Joel & (Joe) Jackson
have all experimented with popular versions of classical idioms; while
(from an earlier generation) Frank Zappa's concert scores have achieved a
certain critical respectability (at least in Europe). In Greece, Mikis
Theodorakis switches fairly regularly between a popular & concert mode
(the Spring Symphony, revolutionary cantata Canto General & ballet Alexis
Zorba are amongst his most successful symphonic pieces); while Joe
Zawinul (spelling?) from the jazz ensemble Weather Report wrote a Danube
symphony... it sprawls a bit (stretches _do_ tend to sound annotated
improvisations); but has some interesting touches. There are probably
others... particularly if you include composers of popular film music
(Goldenthal, Barry, etc) who experiment with concert scores in your search.

All the best,
