JOHN L. COTTER AWARD: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Second Cycle, 2000 (Presentation January 2001 in Long Beach, CA SHA)

The SHA Awards Committee is pleased to announce the opening of the
second cycle of nominations for the John L. Cotter Award. Nominators need to
be SHA members. The Cotter Award is given to historical archaeologists at
the start of their careers. They can either be in training as undergraduate
or graduate students or within the first five years of their professional
careers. The award is given for a single achievement which is truly
outstanding in its respective category but the nature and variety of
categories is open.

Last year the Cotter Award went to Paul R. Mullins for his
impressive first book, RACE AND AFFLUENCE (1999), and the category of first
book or monograph is an excellent category. However, the award is not limited
to this category and there are many other options. For example: work for
a scholarly society (national or local), a major museum exhibit, work in
gaining public recognition for historical archaeology, and field discoveries
are only a sampling of such logical categories.

Nominators must fill out and return the Nomination Form by

                JUNE 30th, 2000

to the Chair of the SHA Awards Committee and then work with the Chair in
completing a file on the candidate. The file will consist of:

(1) the typed, double-spaced formal nomination,
(2) an up-to-date Vita for the nominee,
(3) a copy or sample of the achievement,
(4) supporting materials including summations or different evidence of
the achievement and endorsements from secondary nominators (no
more than two such secondary nominators who would normally
write supporting letters). Secondary nominators are not required
and, if used, do not have to be SHA members.

A full desciption and Nomination Form will appear in the next issue (First
Number for 2000) of the SHA NEWSLETTER, which is now in the mail.
