This is only an impression from living through the period and does
not represent a verified source so take it for what it is worth.  This
trait did not become common until the heavy use of DuraGlass in
WW 2 as a replacement for scare and strategic tin plating for cans.
 It dates slightly earlier but was rare until about 1942.
