I do not have records of the sails of buttons perse but there is plenty of
data about selling enlisted mens and officers belongings in the  War of 1812
and before . It was a common practice in the early years.
 
I have a few enlisted mens returns and am working on a article listing sales
of belongings of about 20 officers.
