I'm forwarding a reply to the coffin hardware query for someone who is

--------Start of fowarded note-----------
Dear Ms. Richardson,
I have just finished analyzing a mid-19th Century cemetery in Illinois and
was able to date some of the unmarked graves by the coffin hardware. These
references should help you -

You might also search the web or other online libraries for coffins,
illustrated catalogues, etc. I know there are a number of trade catalogues
out there, but I could not find any in Illinois. The Hacker-Norton and
Trinkley report has a great listing of trade catalogues.
Good luck with your research.
