Actually, there is a way to double check references. Most lists archive
their posts either on the original server (as HISTARCH does) or on web site
archives. The best template to use when searching list archives is:
//JOB Echo=No
Database Search DD=Rules
//Rules DD*
Search [name/keyword] in [listname] since [yy-mm-dd]
Print all
/*
Send this to the listserv address (it works for all LISTSERV lists), and
you should get a list of hits.
Or, if the citation you have has a specific date, you can request that log
from the listserv address as in GET HISTARCH LOG9810 (October 1998), and
then search through all the emails. However, make sure that you have enough
room in your inbox as these logs can be quite large.
