I have a close friend who has a son with a peanut allergy. She ate large
amounts of peanuts while pregnant and nursing. During her son's first year
he had lots of respiratory symptoms: mucousy, wheezy, congestion, etc. He
was tested for lots of things including cystic fibrosis. On his first
birthday he had a severe reaction at a restaurant while chewing on the crust
of a peanut butter sandwich. He also self-weaned about this time.
I think he was sensitized during pregnancy and breastfeeding. His
respiratory symptoms improved after weaning and subsequent removal of the
allergens. He is also autistic and has gluten/casein sensitivities,
possibly all related.
