I have seen this happen with several moms. What we attribute it to at our
rental station is that she has bonded to the pump- the same as a mom would to
her baby.
This may sound silly but it is generally true.

If I have a mom rent a certain pump for a period of time and then decide to
purchase a cheaper pump (or rent a lactina as opposed to a classic) I always
make sure they try the pump first to make sure it works.

Personally, I used a select for several months with my son, when I started
working at the rental station I would feel "Ghost Letdowns" any time someone
turned on a Lactina even though I hadn't used one for over a year and my son
had weaned. Its now 2 years later and I still feel these ghosts. I'm convinced
its the sound and action of the pump.
