Dear Ann and Pat, I am a bit behind in reading the posts---do I
understand correctly? The 4 month old baby has blood in stools and has
been taken off of mother's milk and given "hypoallergenic" formula? It
sounds like allergies to me, and unless baby is sloughing off his
intestinal lining, I would think mother's milk would be best---she can
be put on a strictly cow protein and soy protein FREE diet, well
supervised in the hospital if need be, until the offending proteins no
longer appear in the milk and baby's gut begins to mend. The above
formula is still cow milk based, and some babies are still sensitive
to it. If the baby is in terrible shape, mom can reduce her diet to
chicken and rice (temporarily), and start adding things in, if the
baby reacts well. (I know of one mom who was offerred Vital formula
for HER to drink in place of foods, so she could continue to nurse!)
I think the dr Pat was thinking of is our favorite pediatric
gastroenterologist and nursing mom, Dr. Maryelle Vonlanthen, in
Arkansas. I guess she is not on this list. If things are this dire,
why not call Dr. Ruth Lawrence's Institute/Office? The doctor might
respect her opinion, where s(he) might not accept the opinions of
others (this time). Just my $.02.

PS. I really enjoy the notes at the bottom of the posts-thanks!
