The State Archeologist administers and manages the Kansas State Historical Society's archeological activities such as investigations, conservation of archeological sites, and research, and supports the advancement of archeology within the state, region, and nation.  This includes the Historical Society's relationship with government agencies, officials, Native American groups, universities, and the private sector to develop and implement programs to protect, manage, conserve and develop archeological resources.
 
The position also includes monitoring state and federal laws which require agency action and initiates and oversees archeological investigations across Kansas. Such work may occur as a result of the Kansas Antiquities Law or Unmarked Burial Law, or federal requirements under NAGPRA.  The position oversees staff archeologists who conduct investigations of important endangered sites dating from the prehistoric times to the 20th century which may result from planned research or required contractual work.
 
The agency has a strong public outreach and customer service ethic so the State Archeologist works closely with staff to integrate archeology into agency activities and responds to inquiries regarding prehistory, Native American groups and both Kansas prehistoric and historic archeology. The office offers archeological consultation to state agencies, professional and avocational archeologists, landowners, teachers, heritage groups and interested individuals.  Staff archeologists work to develop special exhibits and enhance the KSHS's permanent exhibits relating to archeology and Native Americans at the Kansas Museum of History and at the agency's cultural sites, and provides assistance to small Kansas museums for special exhibits.  Public outreach activities also include Archeology Week and the Kansas Archeology Training Program (KATP).
 
The position includes preparation and reviews of special reports, the budget for archeological activities, public and/or scientific publications, grant applications, exhibit text and archeological materials for other agency projects.
 
The Cultural Resources Division (CRD) management style is based on teamwork and staff are expected to maintain a strong customer service ethic. Applicants should be flexible and have a positive work attitude.
 
Master's degree required with graduate degree in archeology, with Ph.D. preferred.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate independent and complex work experience in archeological field, as well as research, writing and leadership abilities at the supervisory work level. Experience or research with Great Plains archeology also preferred.
 
Salary range begins at $32,360.38, plus good state benefits.
