The discussion about herbs as food supplements, as medications, as
something in between are all well taken. IT would be wise as well to
remember that WHATEVER a manufacturer/distributor says about THEIR
product(s) may well be no more than marketing information.

In other words, the material is designed to MOVE the product (by renting or
selling it). It would be appropriate to ALWAYS be cautious about accepting
uncritically any such claims. For my money (and time), I prefer to listen
to the experiences of users of the product(s) in question. In cases where
a client asks me about something with which I am unfamiliar, I honestly
tell her this and suggest that she is free to make her own decision about
whether to use/take etc. the product. However, I would appreciate her
comments re: her expeirence so that I can learn from her. This generates
lots of potentially useful information. I often am given the names of
friends/relatives/others who have used the product as well (or recommended
it). By talking with them, I have also learned things.

Not all about a product will be covered in marketing literature. Certainly
the risks of use of the product are rarely if ever covered. Drugs (western
variety) are required to include side effects in the package inserts. Too
bad other products are not similarly required to do this....
