A preterm baby boy delivered at 35 week, is CMv positive because his mother i
CMV positive. There has been so much controversy over the best approach for
this mother and baby related to breastfeeding. The mother was given the OK to
pump and then later to breastfeed , Now suddenly and drastically, the mother
is told she can no longer breastfeed because she continues to reinfect her
baby by passing on live viruses in the breastmilk to the baby. Several test
have been done on the breastmilk and all have read positive.
The mother has expressed her wish to breastfeed. The doctors have gone through
various formulae feeds most recent is P.............gen.
The baby continues to have almost daily platelet transfusions. The daily
platelet count continues to fall. His liver and spleen is grossly enlarged.
Sometimes he is a golden baby, sometimes green, then grossly jaundiced.
How can this mother and baby be best supported lactation-wise? There are
several reasons for caution here, obviously.BUT, can this mother breastfeed
her baby?
Thank you for valuable input.
