that Prozac is the drug of choice during pregnancy, but knows it isn't
suggested for use during lactation. She does not want to switch back and
forth, especially right after she gives birth and is in such a vulnerable
position, hormonally." Nicki, I can understand not wanting to switch meds
but if certain medications are more suitable at certain times she may need
to switch them. Help reassure her by pointing out the two meds are similar
in action and that the switch she may be anticipating is better than the
reverse alternative. If she is taking Prozac during pregnancy remember it
has a long half life. When she stops taking the Prozac it will still be in
her system during the time she begins the Zoloft. Zoloft generally takes
effect more quickly than Prozac and should be on board and working before
the Prozac wears off completely. The question of just when to switch should
be addressed. Just before term, when baby is fully developed but will still
be exposed to pregnancy meds? This would minimize Prozac exposure during
lactation but expose the baby to Zoloft during pregnancy somewhat. Or,
could she survive a brief time off the Prozac just before term without
starting the Zoloft until just after the birth? Just how harmful is Zoloft
during pregnancy?
