Chris,

My son showed symptoms of Pyloric Stenosis on day 12 and had surgery on
day 14. He did very well. We were told that this was quite unusual,
especially in a breastfed baby, but that we probably caught it more
quickly because my husband had had the same thing as a child and we were
on the lookout. Incidentally, this was nearly eight years ago at
Children's Hospital National Medical Center in D.C. and breastfeeding
was not enthusiastically supported. The drs. forbid me to breastfeed at
all after my son was admitted. His surgery was about 18 hours
later--some of the worst hours of his and my life as he wanted to nurse
SO badly the entire time. After the surgery they wanted him to have a
bottle of pedialite to "prove that everything was working ok." Of
course, my son wanted nothing to do with it. Finally, after I had
begged and begged to be able to breastfeed, a young student nurse walked
in and bodly announced that "breastmilk was a physiologic fluid" and
that breastfeeding would be the best thing for him. No one questioned
her and before they could say anything, I had him on the breast. I don't
know if she ever got into any trouble for this, and I never saw her
again, but I'll never forget her! Hopefully, this hospital is a little
more up-to-date now.
