Leon--

Here in the southeast mining prehistoric shell middens is a common
occurrence. The shell was used as road fill material and also burned for
lime. In addition, the combination of shell and lime was used to make
tabby--basically concrete with shell as the aggregate. It's not unusual to
see tabby structures with pieces of pottery and shell tools imbedded in the
walls--obviously no efforts were made to remove the cultural material from
the shell. I would guess that most of the large coastal shell midden sites
have been utilized for these purposes. There is probably literature out
there on use of the middens, but I am not familiar with any specific
articles--I have seen the results on numerous sites, however.
