Greetings to those on Lactnet. I'm Katherine Catone, IBCLC aka KatCatLC
formerly of S. California, and currently residing in South Texas
(Kingsville) since August. I've been offline since Jan '97 for a number
of reasons, and am so glad to be back. Need to know if any Lactnetters
are in South Texas - if so please contact me. I need to know the
resources around here. Have found it so far to be a non-breastfeeding
friendly environment.
About Candida, anyone who is new to discussions of yeast might want
to check the Lactnet index as I know we've discussed this a LOT in the
past, besides the other treatment options mentioned, I have found that
with persistent cases I've had to recommend that the mother go on a
'yeast free' diet. Avoiding all items with yeast in them or that ferment
easily, yeast rising breads, alcohol (beer & wine), sugar, fruits, etc.
As others have mentioned it seems that mothers with allergies seem more
sensitive, & I encourage them to avoid whatever they are allergic to. I
usually refer them to Dr.William Crook's books on allergies, and yeast as
well as the LC Series guide on Candida. Empowering the mother with
information allows her to choose to work in tandem with her health care
team. This is especially useful for mothers who find topicals have not
worked, and their MD won't prescribe fluconazole, or I had one mother who
had no health insurance, and spouse was out of work so she could not
afford the medication which is very expensive.
