I am a nursing student at the University of North Dakota and I'm
replying to a suggestion by Dr. Auerbach in locating resources to gain
knowledge on the use of benzodiazepines, in particular diazepam, in
breastfeeding mothers.
        According to Briggs, Freeman, and Yaffe, the use of diazepam in
breastfeeding women is not recommended.  The milk:plasma ratios vary from
0.2 to 2.7 and lethargy and loss of weight have been reported.  (Briggs,
Freeman, & Yaffe, 1994, p. 269/d).
        In agreement with Briggs, Freeman, and Yaffe, Hale states that
the use of diazepam with breastfeeding mothers is contraindicated.  The
milk:plasma ratio is the same at 0.2 to 2.7 and the adverse effects are
poor suckling, sedation, lethargy and constipation.  (Hale, 1996, p.
122-123).
        Does anyone have a different opinion on the use of diazepam while
breastfeeding?  Has anyone seen it in their practice or recommended it to
their patients?
