Swallowing blood does no harm to the baby, except that they tend to spit
up more.  I cannot understand this "overkill" approach to dealing with
the baby's problem.  The mother should be breastfeeding, and, unless
there is something you have left out, the baby should not be in
hospital.  There is an easy test to tell if blood is mother's or baby's.
It is called the Apt test, and it would be apt if physicians learned
about it.  It takes two seconds to do.  The test is described in
Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics.

Often bleeding occurs without the mother being aware of it, and it often
does not happen when the mother pumps.
