Cathy - this may be too vague a reference (sorry), but the keynote speaker
at whichever ILCA conference took place in Kansas rencently was this
marvelous Indian woman who headed a WIC program out in LA (perhaps others
can provide better references). I saw a tape of her speech and was
awe-struck by the zillion bright ideas she had successfully used for
increasing BF. They included: wall of fame - photoes of bf clients @ 3
mos., 6 mos., etc. Staff role models. Raffles/events limited to bf Moms
only. SAEs given to Moms to be mailed to WIC office from hospital when baby
delivered, so WIC office would know d.o.b. and be able to pro-actively call
Mom on day 2 before she switched to formula. Lots of PRO active counselors
armed with specific bf questions to ask Mom in first few weeks. Public
service campaigns with local restaurants. And (!!) bf classes with peer
counselors 'planted' in the class saying things like "I had a c-sec and it
didn't stop ME from bf'ing..." etc. She was truly inspirational. If anyone
can get you a better reference from the tape, watch it!
