Hi Charlotte,
I was an Nicu nurse in a former life. I developed a protocol years ago,
while in grad school, for hanging br.milk feeds in nicu. (1991?).
Key points:
- goal: to provide milk which is safe from harmful contamination and has
optimal nutritional qualities and immunological properties.
- fresh milk used whenever possible. use oldest frozen milk next.
(exception may be to use the colostrum.)
- thaw milk in refrig. and do not let stand at room temp (remember, this
is nicu setting).
- shaking and mixing the milk and elevating the syringe all help to
optimize nutrition by preventing losses of fat and protein which can
either "settle out" or adhere to the fdg apparatus. also prevents infant
receiving a fat bolus.
- using a small diameter tubing (microbore, micropore?) will likely
increase turbulence, thus decrease fat adherence to the tubing and
eliminates wastage of mothers milk.
- change entire setup q 4 hrs. Wash hands well and use clean technique
when handling milk and fdg apparatus.

Charlotte, we used AutoSyringe pumps that could take small syringe
sizes(also back then had something called a Harvard pump) and used the
microbore tubing which I think held only 1 - 3cc, it was really tubing
that could be used as an IV extension tubing. Check with purchasing dept
to see what they have. All this may need to be updated, but hope this
helps.
