Lynn, I'm glad your talk was so successful.

If anyone asks you again, what is the cut-off time -- my thought is that it is never too late to offer the baby the breast. Look at all the experiences that have been shared over Lactnet, and in other forums.

Babies who are three months or more, and have never been to breast seem to be willing/able to learn to latch (especially if there is something to reward them besides just the comfort of the breast), when they have been deprived due to poor suck, mouth malformations, disease, prematurity, lack of a mom (adopted babies), etc. On the other hand, women who have never been pregnant are able to stimulate some milk supply, and often complete milk supply for their adopted infants. Grandmothers relactate to feed their grandchildren. Etc.

So the question to ask the person asking you, is, "What is the goal, and what is the level of dedication?" The longer we wait to bring baby and breast together and/or to start stimulating the breasts, the more limited the chances of 100% success, if success is measured in the amount of milk supply. But mom's have overcome overwhelming odds, so we have to say anything is possible -- how much effort are you willing to invest?

Sincerely, Chanita
