I tend to agree with Pam Holland that mothers (anyone!) are entitled to the
information so that they can make intelligent choices. If Parlodel has been
prescribed for a mother I am working with, or if she asks in advance about
"drying up pills" then I do tell her that although this drug is still
registered in Zimbabwe for this purpose, it has been withdrawn for
suppression of puerperal lactation in the country which first manufactured
it because of unfortunate side effects including dizziness and nausea and
"other things". Unless she asks I don't actually mention death and stroke,
but I do suggest ways that she can suppress lactation equally effectively,
just as quickly and with less risk of engorgement or mastitis and absolutely
no side effects. Quite often the mother decides to take the drug anyway
because her doctor prescribed it, but stops after 3 or 4 days (instead of
taking the full course of 14 days) because she finds that draining to
comfort and cabbage in between times works so well.
