MILITARY ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT PROJECTS
 
Four postgraduate internships will be awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, St. Louis District for participation in archaeological curation
management projects for the U.S. military.  Interns will assist in
collecting data pertinent to completing cultural resource management
summaries and archaeological inventories.   Incumbents will also make
visits to state archaeological records centers, collections centers, and
military installations throughout the United States.  Data gathered from
bibliographic references, archival materials, telephone interviews, and
physical inspections of collections will be entered into computerized
databases.  Report writing is also required.
 
The projects will provide interns with a broad exposure to applied
anthropology in the federal setting.  They will be interacting with federal
and state agencies, private and public universities and museums, cultural
resource management personnel at military installations, and private
contractors.   The projects provide numerous possibilities for research
concerning federal legislation and American archaeology; the history and
status of collections curation at the national, regional or installation
levels; and the developing role of Native Americans, Hawaiians, and
Alaskans in federal environmental legislation.
 
Considerable travel will be required.  Two of every four weeks will be
spent making on-site visits.  The other two weeks will be used to enter
data, conduct phone interviews, prepare reports, and make arrangements for
the next trip.
 
Applicants should have a bachelor's or master's degree (preferred) in
museum studies or anthropology, with an emphasis in North American
archaeology, human osteology, or Native American ethnology.  Experience
working with museum collections, site records, and archival materials is
required.  Word processing and database management skills associated with
archaeological collections management are requisite, as are good writing
and verbal communication skills.  Candidates will be required to lift and
manipulate heavy (up to 50 pounds) artifact containers.
 
The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens and permanent resident
aliens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, national origin,
or status as a Vietnam Era veteran or disabled veteran.  Participants will
be selected based on academic records, recommendations, and compatibility
of background and experience with project requirements.
 
 
 
 This Postgraduate Research Participation Program is administered by Oak
Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).  Participants will be
mentored by and work in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mandatory Center
of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections'
offices in the St. Louis District.
 
Appointments are full time, for a one-year period, renewable for up to two
additional years upon recommendation of the St. Louis District and
dependent upon funding.  Annual stipends start at $26,000 for a bachelor's
degree recipient and $28,800 for a master's degree.  Federal taxes will not
be withheld from the stipend and will be the responsibility of the
appointee.  Participants must show proof of health and medical insurance
(either through a private plan or by purchase from the plan available
through ORISE).
