My name is Tamara Elliott, and I am an LLL Leader in Round Rock, TX. I have a situation with a mom that needs some insight. First contact with mom was today. Here is the situation:

8 month old baby girl
Baby was doing fine until she caught RSV at 4 months
Dr. put her on Albuterol bronchial-dilator
Baby stayed up for 72 hours after being given the Albuterol

Parents say that since then, she has been a different baby. The baby
does not sleep at night now. At night she is also extremely
irritable,cries inconsolably,and is gassy.

The baby has had problems in the past with fissures, which have healed
fine now, and constipation.

The mom has taken the baby to a specialist (gastroenteroligist) now, and
he has recommended that she wean and give a formula called Alimentum.
This baby has had barrium swallows and unltrasounds performed. The Dr.
said that he really didn't have an answer, but he suspected that the
baby was having a problem digesting the protein in breastmilk. The only
problem with this theory is that the baby is fine during the day. She is
only like this at night. Is it possible to only have a problem with
protein at night? I have never heard of such.

The mom has been supplementing with Alimentum since Friday and the baby
is doing really well. The baby is sleeping through the night now, and is not
constipated.

The mom would like to continue to nurse, but she doesn't want to harm
her baby. She is looking for answers as to what is going on.

Could there be a link between what happened with the RSV at 4 months and
what is going on now? Is it possible for the baby to only have a protein
digestion problem at night?
