Dear Colleagues:

The relatively small and cozy, used-to-be historians-only GULF COAST HISTORY
AND HUMANITIES CONFERENCE has been convinced to include HISTORICAL
ARCHAEOLOGY in its subject area. (Yes, I am on the board and have been
working on them!) In my opinion, archaeologists and historians need to be
together more in professional conferences, so we are trying out this idea at
the next meeting in OCTOBER 1997 ON PENSACOLA BEACH, FL.

I encourage you to submit a paper on your historical archaeology research
and begin this interdisciplinary exchange with this conference. We
(University of West Florida) will present a panel on our Early Spanish
Period Presidio research in Pensacola, the Late Colonial Water Powered
Industry research in West Florida, the 1559 Luna fleet Shipwreck we are
working on, and Greg Waselkov's team will present their French colonial Old
Mobile research.

This is a researcher and graduate student friendly conference. Is should be
small (100- 200 people), no competing sessions and focused on Historical
Archaeology on the Gulf Coast. In addition, ALL THE PAPERS ARE PUBLISHED
from this conference in the Conference Proceedings.

The weather should be excellent and the hotel is right on the beach!

I encourage you and your students and colleagues to present your research
and attend this conference where historians and archaeologist working in the
same time periods can meet and share information and ideas!
