I encourage you to email the following media folks and tell them to stop
the glorification of treasure hunting. It is hard to tell if they know
the difference between treasure hunters and archaeologists. We need to
let them know what that is.

Recently, in perusing the web, I have come across the below-listed requests for
information on treasure hunts from cable TV networks.  It occurs to me that the
archaeological community is great at complaining about the salvage vs. science
conundrum but does a pretty poor job at getting the message out to the popular
media.  I suggest that interested members of this group contact these
organizations and encourage them to present a balanced perspective on marine
archaeology.  I am not suggesting that you call and badmouth salvors as I
believe some have made valid points in this forum, but CNN and Discovery (for
example) are woefully negligent when it comes to showing the difference between
the two practices.  Their formula seems to be "treasure = sexy = more viewers;
archaeology = science = boring = fewer viewers".  I would also recommend that
you all check out the Treasure forums at the below address.

       My name is Davin Hutchins and I'm a reporter with CNN Newsroom, a
30-minute commercial-free news and
       features show geared toward high school students. Newsroom airs 4:30 a.m.
EST worldwide on CNN and
       CNN International. The show is also taped by many of our 35,000 affiliate
schools and rebroadcast in the
       classroom.
 
       CNN Newsroom is proposing doing a series on professional treasure hunters
and shipwreck divers in the
       month of June for air in the fall. I've sent this cold solicitation out
to check the interest from companies I
       found over the Internet. Our aim is to accompany a crew for 3 to 5 days
as they take to the sea and scubadive
       with the crew. We would like to bring underwater cameras and scubadive
with you to capture the full
       experience.
 
       If you or someone you know would be interested in participating, PLEASE
CONTACT ME AS SOON AS
       POSSIBLE. The best method is via e-mail; please list in some detail the
projects you are working on in the
       Florida/Caribbean area. Also include an approximate calendar for June so
we can coordinate a shoot date.
 
       I sent out this letter to many companies; in fact, you may competitors on
certain dive sites. This is to instill
       competitive interest. Basically, we'll operate on a first-come,
first-serve basis. This series should be publicity
       for your firm and your industry. It will also give our audience an inside
look at how modern day treasure
       hunters operate while also introducing them to history and underwater
archaeology.
