I may have missed something, but was the patient being transfused
when this nurse/nursing mother was accidently stuck with the needle
identified as being HIV-positive?
Betty Crase at La Leche League International's Center for
Breastfeeding Information (CBI) has many new articles regarding
breastfeeding and HIV. There is a fee to contact her, but she can send
copies of any of these:
Timbo, Babgaleh, MD and Sean Altekruse, DVM, and Mary-Glen Fowler
MD. "Breastfeeding and HIV transmission: epidemiologic studies and
their limitations. " Nutr Res 96-5: 16(3):759-68. (Has a bib of 50
references)
Guay, Laura, MD, David L. Hom, MSS, Francis Mmiro, MBchB et al.
"Detection of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) DNA and p24
antigen in breast milk of HIV-1 infected Ugandan women and vertical
transmission". Pediatraics, 96-9. 98(3)pt 1: 438-44.
Tovo, Peir-Angelo, Maurizio de Martino, Calra Gabiano et al.
"Mode of delivery and gestational age influence perinatal HIV-1
transmission". J AIDS Hum Retrovirol 96. 11(1): 88-94. (Discusses
cesarean deliveries vs vaginal ones)
This is a most unfortunate incident and I feel badly for the
decision this mother is forced to make. Hope this helps!
