Carla,
The mom in my practice who had herpes on her nipples was nursing a
toddler, and only had a few lesion, one on the tip of each nipple that
looked like drying out chicken pox, and one or two higher on each breast.
  Usually recurrent herpes simplex is not as severe as you describe.  Is
the mother immunosupressed?
