Dani, I have seen an infant like this. All sorts of elimination diets were
tried, as well as hypoallergenic formulas, etc. Baby essentially refused
most formulas and (smart baby) refused to wean. Keeping him on breastmilk
probably saved his life while his parents tried to discover the source of
his problems. Ultimately he was taken to another city to consult with an
environmental allergist. There it was discovered that he was profoundly
allergic to fumes of chemicals in carpet fiber. All carpet was removed from
his house and car, and he became much more able to tolerate foods of all
sorts. His body burden was just too over-loaded so long as he was exposed
to the primary allergy to cope with other minor sensitivities. Now with
rotation diets, etc. he is managing. He was 4 mo. old when I first saw him,
and for most of his whole 1st year everyone blamed the problem on
breastfeeding and mom's diet. I'm convinced he would have died if weaned.
He is now 3.5 and while small, is growing and normal. BTW, the original
food which provoked his first outbreak of eczema was rice cereal at 3.5 mo.
