In a message dated 96-08-25 11:46:39 EDT, you write:
<< I agree with you. My tendency is to "scare the Hell out of them". But
unfortunately this turns them off completely and trust is lost. When
our warnings on restrictive parenting are not heeded supplementary
feedings invariably follow until the infant is completely artificially
fed. A parent will and must make their own decisions whether they come
by it gently or otherwise. >>
I agree with Trina. Many of the families who adhere to the particular
program we are discussing will quickly chuck the breastfeeding in favor of
the program.
I believe that this will happen as long as our culture--in Christian circles
as well--does not accept breastfeeding as the norm and as important,
desirable, whatever. Part of the whole idea of this program is to meet
Spiritual needs. If one needs to change feeding methods--seen as fairly
equal--to accomplish spiritual goals, that would be done immediately. If, on
the other hand, spiritual goals must be ignored in order to
breastfeed--considered little more than a fad--*that* is not going to happen.
We still have much work to do to teach people how important breastfeeding is
(& as a Christian I teach in churches that it is God's design, superior to
any book or program!).
