With the high cesarean rates here we also deal with a lot of babies who are
mucousy. In fact, some are the tongue-suckers I have been speaking of - they
guard their esophagus and suck their tongues - but don't want anything going
down into their already-full stomach.
One thing I have used after two or three shifts have been unable to get baby to
nurse is to cupfeed a little glucose water. This usually causes some vomiting,
which then resolves the problem. Those who do not vomit seem to get hungry
about 30 - 40 minutes after giving them the water - perhaps it has "watered
down" the mucus and now it's being processed???
