Linda,
At the New York Aquarium for Wildlife Conservation in Coney Island,
Brooklyn, there is a big deal made of the beluga whales breastfeeding.
The aquarium has the 2 longest lived beluga calves born in captivity.
Casey was 5 this week. There are signs at the exhibit that say "Quiet
Please, Baby Belugas Nursing". New calves are observed daily and their
feeding behavior recorded at 1 minute intervals- bumping (asking to
nurse), nursing, swimming more than a body length away from mom (rare)...
They start solids at around 1 year of age, and nurse for about 2 years.
Glad to hear this is not the only aquarium that calls a mammal a mammal.
