On August 24, someone reported having seen this document and commented that
she thought it "to be extremely accurate."

I am not aware of the IBCLC authors are LACTNET members. If anyone else
knows, it might be helfpul to know this.

I would like to suggest that persons who have seen this document read it
VERY CAREFULLY. Superficially, it appears to be ok, insofar (as noted
previously) it does not show pictures of ABM, have pictures of
bottle-feeding, have supplementation info that is "bad," and the like.

However, it is FILLED with negativity pertaining to breastfeeding. Very
subtly done, alas, this appears simply to be accurate information. Guess
again!

Look at the long list of "problems" a mother can have when breastfeeding.
Place yourself in the position of a (basically) uninformed new mother.
WOuld YOU want to breastfeed after reading that long list?

This booklet is going to be one of several that will be formally evaluated
(I believe the Smith evaluation tool will be used) at a 1997 MILC
(Metropolitan Illinois Lactaiton Cnosultants) meeting, along with other
booklets to alert our new members and those not familiar with how to
evlauate AV materials what to look for to determine if such a piece is
truly HELPFUL or simply another wolf in sheep's clothing (bashing
breastfeeding in the guise of "fully informing" the new mother).

Stay tuned for the outcome of that meeting...

Def. of LC service: "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities
brilliantly disguised as impossible situations."
