Hi all,
It is with sadness that I report the death on Saturday
May 11 of Dr. Basil Furgala. Dr. Furgala conducted much
research aimed at practical beekeeping and was very
involved in finding controls for diseases and pests of
honey bees. His early work here in MN on nosema control
provided beekeepers here in the upper midwest with the
needed information on control of this disease. He also
worked on the proper use of TM to control AFB and EFB.
In the last few years before his retirement he worked on
control of tracheal mites and was one of the first in
North America to document the damaging effects of the
mites on colonies of honey bees wintered in the north.
These are just a very few of his many contributations.
Basil will be missed but much of his work will continue
to be used by beekeepers throughout the US.
