I have extracted the following from the Port Elizabeth Breastfeeding Liaison
Group newsletter:-
"The P.E. Breastfeeding Liaison Group and the Dept. of Health & Welfare in
the Eastern Cape, launched a "Support Breastfeeding" project in August 1995
in order to create awareness and to celebrate the 8th South African National
Breastfeeding Week, under the theme "Breastfeeding - a community
responsibility". Nominations were made by mothers who had breastfed or who
were still breastfeeding their babies. Any person who supported the mother
while she was breastfeeding could be nominated. The mother and nominee
received a certificate at a tea function, presented by the various local
authorities."

This form of community involvement went very well last year, so other parts
of the country are being encouraged to follow suit. The Eastern Cape, one of
9 provinces in S.A., will be running the campaign in health care facilities
throughout the province again for this year: "Working Together to Protect,
Promote and Support Breastfeeding". Good luck to all of you with your
preparations!
