Diane, Sharon and all

I know that for different reasons some parents elect to give pumped/expressed
milk or formula in a bottle. When I'm working with moms who are using an
alternative feefing method, bottle, finger, etc. one thing I try to stress
is that the baby be fed in a way that preserves the baby actively seeking the
food. By this I mean that I tell them to first touch the baby's lips, WAIT
for the mouth to open and the baby seek the food source as s/he would the
breast. And then to have the baby's lips well-flanged around the bottle teat
or finger. By doing this the baby is much less likely to become a passive
feeder who waits and then just accepts the finger or bottle. This has worked
well for the women who have tried it with their babies back on the breast
after the suck training or whatever interventions have been used.
