We are trying to date a section of a gun barrel in one of our collections.
The section was identified by T.M. Hamilton (according to an
accompanying note) as a French musketoon, Model 33-34. Can anyone
give me dates for when this type of gun was in use by Europeans or
traded to the Indians of the southeastern US? Although a French gun,
would it have been available to English troops around the time of the
American Revolution?

A second note regarding the same section of gun barrel indicates that
the section may have been chiseled from the original barrel after the
original was damaged. Removal of the damaged section made the gun
usable again. Was this, in fact, a common practice?

Any help or comments would be appreciated.
