Headquarters Heliogram is the official publication of the Council on
America's Military Past (CAMP).  Memberships ($35 yr) are available from:

"Blacks in the West: Image and Reality" will be the subject of the Fourth
Annual American Heritage Center Symposium, September 21-23 at the University
of Wyoming in Laramie.  More information is available at (800) 448-7801 /

Fort Stanton NM is claimed to be the only remaining active example of a
frontier Army post.  The Governor of New Mexico wants to lease the property
for reuse so the state may earn at least $1 million a year.
Preservationists want the 1855 post preserved as an historic site and
believe the post will realize more than $1 million in tourist dollars every
year.  Proposals for leasing the facility are due November 13th, with the
state due to choose a tenant by December 29th.  The facility contains 1,300
acres and 80 buildings, 13 of which are listed on the state's historic

The state of New Mexico, an ISTEA grant of $299,060 paid for developing a
plan to relocate a highway off the Glorieta Pass battlefield, and the state
highway department provided a local match of $50,940.
