I have been involved in treating at least 5 women in the past year with
breast abcesses. All have continued to breastfeed and their babies have
remained healthy. I refer them to one of two breast surgeons south of
Adelaide South Australia who drain them using a 19 guage needle /. syringe
and ultrasound imaging. They usually need to be drained 2-6 times over 1-2
weeks as an outpatient.Antibiotics are continued and the baby continues to
feed from the affected side. One of the surgeons is the Professor at the
University hospital.Carolyn Lawlor-Smith GP/lC
